Tell me, do you like Neutral Milk Hotel?
Their early tapes were a little experimental for my taste, but when Avery Island came out in ‘96, I think they really came into their own, both commercially and artistically. The whole album has a fuzzy, trumpety sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalsim that really gives the songs a big boost. He’s been compared to Four Volts, but I think that Jeff has far more crazed, over-the-top vocals.
In ‘98 Jeff released this, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is “Holland, 1945”, a song so catchy, most people probably don’t listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it’s not just about Jeff Mangum’s obsessions with Anne Frank, it’s also a personal statement about abuse and incest brought about by his dad!
Hey Paul!

Crying so hard over Ros.
Me too. Getting close to the limit of my tolerance as far as the showrunners’ love of sexual/sexualised violence is concerned (which exists in the book, but not to “HBO” levels). Why bother to invent a new character, have viewers become invested in her, and then fridge her so unceremoniously? So sick of women - and especially sex workers - serving as little more than props to demonstrate male characters’ evil qualities.
walking the cow makes me feel so melancholy but in such a good way its a terrible wonderful experience
BIO-HAZARD—”When bad bios happen to good people…”
#33: Bio As Artist Manifesto Totally Absent of Any Concrete Facts (aside from the part about her having been “meditating for the past 15 years”— which, now that I think of it, might explain a few things here…)
My advice: unless you’re a chemist (or a bad dentist), avoid the world “amalgam.”
